Keeping Our Crews and Community Safe
At Yakama Power, safety is not a baseline legal requirement—it is a community obligation. Our infrastructure spans 1.4 million acres of reservation land, operating under unique geographic and environmental conditions. We are committed to maintaining an accident-free environment for both our field crews and the families we serve.
Power Line Safety Around Your Home
Overhead power lines carry thousands of volts of electricity. Treat every hanging or downed wire as energized and dangerous.
The 35-Foot Rule
Always maintain a minimum distance of 35 feet away from any downed or sagging utility line. Never attempt to drive over or move a fallen wire.
Look Up and Around
Before using ladders, trimming tree branches, or operating tall agricultural machinery, look up to locate overhead power lines. Keep all equipment at least 10 feet away from wires.
Call Before You Dig
Underground power lines and irrigation piping crisscross the reservation. Protecting these lines prevents hazardous strikes. Always dial 811 at least two business days before digging or trenching.
Vehicle Accidents Involving Utility Poles
If your vehicle strikes a utility pole and lines fall onto the car, the metal frame becomes energized.
⚠️ Critical Action: Stay inside the vehicle. It is the safest place. Call 911 and wait for Yakama Power crews to isolate the line.
Only exit if the vehicle catches fire. To exit safely, jump completely clear of the vehicle without touching the metal frame and the ground at the same time. Land with both feet together and hop or shuffle your feet slowly away without lifting them, keeping them touching at all times to prevent electrical current from passing through your body.
